Republic of Mircea
Mircea is the country Hershel left. The Republic of Mircea — referred to in CASCADE’s official Operant Bureau dossier as the “former Republic of Mircea” — is the defunct nation where Hershel Wilk was born, raised, and politically radicalised, before being forced to flee for the People’s Republic of Kohila sometime before ‘82.
By the time the game opens in ‘96, Mircea no longer exists as a sovereign state. Hershel’s dossier flags it as former. The game doesn’t yet specify exactly when or how Mircea collapsed, only that it happened before her recall.
Why this country matters to CASCADE
The Mircea backstory is the longest piece of Hershel’s pre-Bureau biography on the launch wiki.
The arc:
- Birth and youth in Mircea. Hershel was born in the city of Landau and was living in Mircea with her mother as late as ‘79.
- Political radicalisation. As a student, she developed radical political beliefs — the wiki doesn’t specify the exact framework, but the destination tells you the direction.
- Persecution by Mircean monotheists. Mircea’s dominant religion is a monotheistic faith centred on a deity named Polaris. The same religion has followers in Portofiro. Hershel’s politics put her in conflict with the religious institutions of her home country, and the conflict became persecution.
- Defection to Kohila. Sometime before ‘82, Hershel fled to the People’s Republic of Kohila, a communist state inside the Superbloc. This is the path that eventually puts her in the Operant Bureau.
So when CASCADE talks about home, “home” has been complicated for nearly twenty years. The country exists in past tense. The religion she grew up around is one of the things that drove her out. The mother she lived with until ‘79 is, as of the launch wiki, an unresolved thread.
The Polaris religion
The Mircean monotheistic faith worships Polaris. This is one of three named deity figures the launch wiki documents — Polaris, plus the angels Canopus, Deneb, and Rasalhague mentioned in the Sixty-Six Wolves cartoon (where Canopus is the angel who cursed Nabia, and Deneb / Rasalhague / Polaris are the angels Canopus is at war with).
That overlap of “Polaris” between Mircean theology and Sixty-Six Wolves angel-cosmology is doing work somewhere in the writing. As of the launch wiki, the relationship isn’t fully spelled out. What’s confirmed: it’s the same word for a real religion in Mircea (and Portofiro) and for a war-angel in a Luzian cartoon.
Mircean diaspora in Portofiro
The Mircean monotheist religion has followers in Portofiro itself. That means Hershel’s ‘96 return isn’t a clean re-entry into a foreign place — the religious community she fled in Mircea has a presence in the city she’s now operating in. Expect that to come up in dialogue with certain Portofiran NPCs.
The Mircean language is also documented. Hershel speaks it natively. Expect Records and Personalism checks to fire around Mircean-language detail in Portofiro.
Cities
- Landau — Hershel Wilk’s birthplace.
What’s confirmed vs. unknown
Confirmed: Mircea is a defunct country, the home of Hershel Wilk, the site of her radicalisation, the place she was persecuted out of, and a country with a monotheistic Polaris-religion that also has Portofiran adherents.
Unknown to the player at the launch wiki: exactly when and how Mircea ceased to exist, whether it was absorbed into a larger entity (and if so, which one — Superbloc, La Luz, EMTERR-aligned, or a fourth power not yet documented), the fate of Hershel’s mother, the full set of Mircean cities, and the specifics of Hershel’s political framework.
