Description

Game flavor: "A pair of brown loafers with a unique eyeball buckle — gifted by an old friend. Perhaps meant as a reminder: at all times, you are being watched."

The trade: [Cold Read](/wiki/skills/cold-read) +1, [Coordination](/wiki/skills/coordination) -1. Loafers that read people for the cost of moving slower.

That's a real stat-trade. Cold Read is Intellect-cluster (catches lies, reads inner states). Coordination is Action-cluster (physical movement, dexterity checks). The Loafers tilt Hershel's starter loadout toward sit-and-watch and away from chase-and-grab.

Upgrade paths:

- [Vaquero Boots](/wiki/items/vaquero-boots) (☉ 31, Carmuna) — Records +1, no penalty. Drops the Coordination cost. - Other shoes TBD as the wiki fills in.

The "gifted by an old friend" flavor is the lore hook. The friend is unnamed in the launch wiki. The eyeball buckle, the "you are being watched" framing — this is the kind of detail that pays off later. Hold onto them through act 1 even if you upgrade, in case dialogue triggers on the gift.

For a starting build, the Cold Read +1 is genuinely useful in basically every conversation. The Coordination -1 hurts most in chase scenes and physical-skill checks.

Acquisition
