Poetics

Poetics is the Intellect-faculty skill for the part of the mind that sees what other people can't say. The metaphor. The image. The thing the situation is actually about, underneath what it's literally about. If Grey Matter is the laboratory, Poetics is the room where someone is writing the story of what the laboratory found. It's the skill the writing uses for the strange, the symbolic, and the funny — and it pairs unusually well with Personalism for any scene where the read on a person isn't quite arithmetic.

Costs

  • Burns Delirium. Poetics at high values pushes the Intellect stress meter the same way the rest of the faculty does.
  • Reads can be wrong in a way Grey Matter's can't. A Poetics hit at the wrong moment is a CASCADE writing a poem about a scene that needed a fact instead.

Poetics is one of the five Intellect-faculty skills, alongside Entanglement, Grey Matter, Records, and Technoflex. It doesn't just analyse — it interprets, names, reframes.

It's the writing's pressure-release valve. Zero Parades is stuffed with characters whose lives don't reduce to a Grey Matter conclusion: Subcomandante Bagman in his paper bag, the Whole Sick Crew tending PSEUDOPOD on his cot, the Sword-Wielding Child and Transfixed Child sitting in front of Sixty-Six Wolves merch like it's a religion. The right read on any of them is partly metaphorical. Poetics lands that read.

It's also the skill that handles the game's humour. The Bagman segments, the Mister Artista hair set, the absurdity of the Bootleg Bazaar — Poetics is the voice that says *this is funny, and the joke is doing real work.* A 1-Poetics CASCADE watches the bit. A 4-Poetics CASCADE understands what the bit is for.

It's the writer's voice in her head. Picks the metaphor. Catches the rhyme. Names the bit when the bit is being a bit. Not the loudest, often the funniest. For a 14-year veteran with literary instincts and five years in the Freezer with mostly herself for company, Poetics is what lets her say some of it out loud.

Poetics checks resolve symbolic, metaphorical, and creative reads — the layer of meaning past the literal one. Also covers humour-recognition and verbal wit. Burns Delirium (purple), the Intellect-faculty stress resource. If the Intellect stress meter caps at 20, an Intellect skill drops a level. Preset starts: Kinetic 3, Charismatic 2, Analytical 4.

Builds & playstyles

**Kinetic (Intellect 3):** workable. Lands the obvious symbolic beats, misses the subtle ones.

**Charismatic (Intellect 2):** soft. Leans on Personalism for what Poetics would otherwise catch.

**Analytical (Intellect 4):** anchor support for the Intellect stack. Reads the game the way the writers want it read.

No documented Conditioning Thought directly buffs Poetics. Ghost Recorder buffs Records/Technoflex, Single-Write Only buffs Entanglement/Shadowplay — Poetics is on its own.
