Shadowplay

Shadowplay is the Action-faculty skill for the body that doesn't want to be seen. Sleight of hand, lockpicking, lifting a wallet, moving through a crowd without being remembered, slipping out of a room nobody knew you were in. Tradecraft for the hands and feet. It pairs with Single-Write Only (the Conditioning Thought that buffs it +1) and with the Operant Toolkit — together that's the spec for a CASCADE who'd rather steal the answer than ask for it.

For any action you'd rather go undetected. Advanced, covert spy techniques.

Shadowplay is one of the five Action-faculty skills, alongside Coordination, Doppelgäng, Instincts, and Sensors. It's the body trained to leave no trace.

Cleanest 'spy skill' in the kit. Where Coordination is climbing the wall, Shadowplay is climbing it without anyone hearing. Picking locks, lifting items, palming a key off a desk, walking through the Bootleg Bazaar without any vendor remembering you. Bread and butter.

It also matters institutionally. CASCADE was recalled with no live operation — the Opera officially cancelled the assignment when PSEUDOPOD was zeroed out. Anything you do in Quisach off-book is the kind of thing you'd rather wasn't seen. Shadowplay keeps the off-book work off-book.

It's the operant's quiet voice. The one that says *don't.* Don't be seen, don't be heard, don't be remembered. Where Statehood walks into a room and demands the floor, Shadowplay walks out of it and is gone before anyone names it.

For 14-year CASCADE, this is the muscle memory of the job at its purest. The Opera's whole logic is that operants are deniable. Shadowplay is what lives up to the denial.

Mechanics

Shadowplay checks resolve covert physical tradecraft — lockpicking, sleight of hand, pickpocketing, stealth movement, leaving rooms without trace. Burns Fatigue (red). Buffed +1 by the Single-Write Only Conditioning Thought (which also buffs Entanglement and grants +1 to all Red Checks). Conditioned by spending Skill Points on the Thought. Preset starts: Kinetic 4, Charismatic 3, Analytical 2.

Builds & playstyles

**Kinetic (Action 4):** the big-body / small-touch spec — a CASCADE who can also hit. Fine.

**Charismatic (Action 3):** workable but underweight. Can avoid trouble but not engineer it.

**Analytical (Action 2):** painful. You'll walk past a lot of locked content. Bump with Skill Points if you care about tradecraft.

**Single-Write Only Conditioning:** +1 Shadowplay, +1 Entanglement, +1 to all Red Checks. Turns a mid-spec Shadowplay into a real one. Violation: loading from saves.
