ZERO PARADES wiki

Single-Write Only

A wise man once said that whatever happens has already happened. Now it looks like someone's been keeping track. Welcome to the rest of all possible worlds. Single-Write Only is the Conditioning Thought that punishes CASCADE for reloading saves — and rewards her, while she's not reloading, with an Intellect-and-Action stack that turns her into a slightly metaphysical operant. It's the meta-Thought, the one that's about the player as well as the character.

Description

*A wise man once said that whatever happens has already happened. Now it looks like someone's been keeping track. Welcome to the rest of all possible worlds.*

Single-Write Only is one of four documented Conditioning Thoughts, alongside Primitive Accumulation, Ghost Recorder, and The Quest For It. Reinforce it with Skill Points to activate; suppress to switch off without losing the slot.

The name is the joke. *Single-write-only* is the term for storage you can only write to once — a CD-R, a one-shot archive, your own life. The Thought is the operant agreeing with the universe that every choice is permanent. The buff pays when CASCADE plays as if every choice really is.

The combination is unusually wide. Most Conditioning Thoughts buff two specific skills. Single-Write Only buffs two skills AND a whole faculty's worth of checks. By raw stat output, it's the strongest documented Thought.

The violation is the meta-mechanic. The game reads the operant's save-load behaviour and folds it back in. Reload a save to undo a bad outcome and every Reinforced Effect switches off; Intellect checks take a penalty until the violation clears. The game is asking the player to play Zero Parades the way it wants to be played — once-through, no quietly rerolling the bad dice. Single-Write Only bites you for treating the game as a system to optimise rather than a story to live with.

Builds & playstyles

**Strongest fit:** Kinetic builds. +1 to all Red Checks is a free upgrade to the entire Action faculty.

**Great fit:** Analytical builds that want Entanglement at 5. Cleanest path to a maxed Entanglement spec.

**Ugly fit:** any player who save-scums to navigate the stress meters. Violation fires constantly.

Pairs with **Entanglement**, **Shadowplay**, and every other Action skill via the Red Check bonus.
