Loud João

Loud João is the third pilot at the Backways table. He’s a retired, expatriate airplane pilot who drinks in The Backways of Quisach with Pigeon and Slava. The three of them are the launch wiki’s documented Backways drinking table.

His name is doing the descriptive work the wiki doesn’t get around to. “Loud João” is the loud one. Pigeon (the one who escaped the bombing on a stolen plane) is named for the bird that survives the city. Slava (Slavic root, meaning “glory” — possibly an honorific) is named with a hint of Eastern European or Slavic heritage. Loud João’s identifier is volume.

What the launch wiki gives you

The Fandom page for Loud João is a one-sentence stub: retired expatriate pilot, drinks with the other two, located in the Backways. The page contains no further documented backstory. As of the wiki’s launch state, Loud João’s history is the least documented of the three Backways pilots.

What’s confirmable across pages:

  • He’s a retired pilot, like Pigeon and Slava.
  • He’s an expatriate — meaning he’s not Portofiran by origin. He came from somewhere else.
  • He drinks with Pigeon and Slava, suggesting some shared history or at least a shared social niche.
  • The name “João” places him linguistically in a Lusophone-coded space (Portuguese / Brazilian / Lusophone-African). The Tenantries of Saint Ulwen and Portofiro itself appear to have Lusophone-coded linguistic influences in their naming conventions (Quisach, Carmuna Pessoa, Loud João itself).

What’s not yet documented:

  • Which country Loud João flew for before retirement.
  • Whether he was at St. Ulwen with Pigeon during the Reunión (Pigeon’s documented connection to the Tenantries doesn’t extend to Loud João on the launch wiki).
  • What he’s loud about.
  • Whether the three drinkers met in retirement or knew each other earlier.

How to read him

In the absence of detailed backstory, treat Loud João as the social texture of the Backways table — the third voice that keeps the conversation going. The other two have clearly documented histories tied to the Tenantries. Loud João rounds out the table without (yet) being a named witness to the Reunión.

Approach the table:

  • Pigeon is the centre of the table’s documented backstory and the giver of the Critical Wolf Cup.
  • Slava is the gallows-humour one with the Tenantry passport joke.
  • Loud João is the loud one, the one who’s holding court while the other two drink.

Skills that pay off when reading him:

  • Cold Read — for the dynamic between the three drinkers. Who’s actually listening to whom.
  • Personalism — for the “what does this man want” question once the volume settles.
  • Records — knowing the Lusophone-coded geography of the game (Portofiro, the Tenantries, the wider Territories) helps locate where Loud João might have been from before retirement.

A note on what’s not yet documented

This is one of the more source-limited NPC pages on the launch wiki. The Fandom entry is a stub. The cross-page material is thin. The character will almost certainly fill in as players play the game and as the wiki gets updated with dialogue content. This page captures what’s available at launch and will be updated when it isn’t.

Pigeon, Slava, Tenantries of Saint Ulwen, Quisach, Portofiro.
