ZERO PARADES wiki

Slava

Slava is the pilot with the joke about the passport. He’s a retired, expatriate airplane pilot who drinks in The Backways of Quisach with Pigeon and Loud João. The three of them are the launch wiki’s documented Backways drinking table.

Slava is one of the two members of that table tied to the Tenantries of Saint Ulwen, the defunct island state that La Luz re-annexed via the Reunión and the berrion bombing of St. Ulwen in the early ’80s. Pigeon escaped the bombing by stealing a Luzian cargo plane. Slava’s connection to the Tenantries is documented through his old Tenantry passport, which he jokes about using to “return home” in the event that the Luzians turn their attention to Portofiro.

The passport joke

The joke is the centre of Slava’s documented character.

Slava holds an old Tenantry passport — a document from a country that no longer exists. He jokes about using it to return home if La Luz moves on Portofiro the way it moved on St. Ulwen.

Three things are happening in that joke at once:

  1. The passport doesn’t work. The Tenantries were absorbed into La Luz years ago. The document is, legally, scrap paper.
  2. “Home,” in the joke, was wiped off the map by the same Luzians the joke is about. The country Slava would be “returning” to was obliterated by berrion bombs.
  3. If La Luz did move on Portofiro the way it moved on the Tenantries, holding an old Tenantry passport would be exactly the wrong document to be caught with.

It’s gallows humour from a man who has watched what La Luz can do to a city it wants back, and who knows perfectly well that the passport in his pocket won’t help him next time.

How to read him

What the launch wiki gives you to work with:

  • Slava is at least as old as Pigeon — old enough to have held a Tenantries passport before the Reunión.
  • He’s stateless in the same way Pigeon is. The country on his ID doesn’t exist anymore.
  • His sense of humour leans dark, dry, and political. He makes the kind of joke that requires the listener to have done the same reading on La Luz that he has.
  • He’s part of the Backways drinking table — meaning he’s a known fixture of the bar, with Pigeon and Loud João as his regular companions.

Skills that pay off when reading him:

  • Cold Read — Slava’s jokes carry more weight than they let on. The tells will be in tone and timing.
  • Personalism — what does an expatriate ex-pilot with a worthless passport actually want from a Bureau operant on an unauthorised assignment.
  • Records — knowing the Reunión and the bombing of St. Ulwen turns the passport joke from “weird old man stuff” into “this is a person who lived through a state-erasure event.”

What’s confirmed vs. unknown

Confirmed: Slava is a retired expatriate pilot, holds an old Tenantry passport, makes the joke about using it to return home if Portofiro is next, drinks in the Backways with Pigeon and Loud João.

Unknown at launch: where Slava flew before retirement (Tenantries military? Civilian? Freelance like Pigeon?), how he made it to Portofiro, his real name (Slava may be a nickname), and whether he and Pigeon escaped together or arrived separately.

Source note: Fandom’s Slava page is a one-sentence stub identifying him as a Backways drinker. The Tenantry-passport joke and the Tenantries connection come from the Tenantries of Saint Ulwen page, which is where the launch wiki’s actual material on Slava lives.

Pigeon, Loud João, Tenantries of Saint Ulwen, La Luz, Portofiro, Quisach.
