Subcomandante Bagman

The Subcomandante is the man with the bag on his head. Subcomandante Bagman is a conspiracy theorist who broadcasts his own television show, Reality Situation, across Portofiro. The Reality Situation broadcasts air on Foto 24 — the same TV station whose adjacent safehouse CASCADE uses as her Foto 24 base of operations — which means whenever the safehouse’s TV is on, Bagman is potentially in the room.

His operational identifier is the paper bag over his head. The wiki doesn’t yet document whether the bag comes off in any segment, or what it would mean if it did. As of the launch wiki, the bag is the face.

The premise of the show

Reality Situation is the in-game name of Bagman’s broadcast. It’s documented as a conspiracy-theorist program — a show in which Bagman, anonymous behind his paper bag, broadcasts whatever conspiracy material he’s working on across Portofiro’s TV airwaves.

The format echoes a specific kind of late-night, low-budget, paranoid-broadcasting tradition. The world of Zero Parades is recognisably ‘90s-coded in its media texture (cassette bootlegs, late-night TV, payphones, Foto 24 as a small local station), and Bagman is the show that runs in the background of all of that.

The “Subcomandante” title is the political bit. It places Bagman in a register that reads as guerilla-revolutionary-cosplay — the kind of figure whose self-styling is a deliberate political statement, regardless of whether the politics are actually coherent.

Why CASCADE has to deal with him

Three reasons Bagman matters for the operation:

  1. He’s the background noise of Foto 24. Reality Situation airs on the station whose safehouse CASCADE uses. Whenever the TV is on in the safehouse, Bagman is potentially the voice in the room. That’s atmosphere, but it’s also operational reality — you cannot get away from him while working out of that location.

  2. His content overlaps with real things. Conspiracy theorists in a city full of actual conspiracies (the Operant Bureau, the Weeping Eye, the Phantom Line, the cultural-blockade economy under EMTERR) are doing one of two things at any given moment: making things up, or pointing at things that are actually happening. Bagman is going to do both. Sorting which is which is the player’s job.

  3. He’s a person, not just a TV signal. Bagman is on the launch wiki as a character, not just as broadcast content — meaning at some point in the game he is meetable in person, somewhere in Portofiro. The launch wiki doesn’t yet pin down where.

How to read him

Skills that pay off:

  • Poetics — load-bearing. Bagman’s whole persona is a performance, and Poetics is the skill that reads performances. Recognising what’s bit and what’s content is the entire interpretive problem.
  • Personalism — the person under the bag. What does Bagman actually want, separate from what Reality Situation says he wants.
  • Cold Read — harder when the face is paper, but voice and body language still tell.
  • Records — when Bagman drops a name or a date or an event, knowing whether it’s real changes the read.

A note on what’s not yet documented

The Fandom page for Subcomandante Bagman is a one-sentence stub. Most of what’s above is inference from cross-page material: the Foto 24 entry, mentions of “Reality Situation” elsewhere on the wiki, the general media texture of Portofiro.

What’s not yet documented and would change this entry meaningfully when it lands:

  • Whether the bag comes off in any storyline.
  • What specific conspiracies Bagman is running with — which ones are inventions and which ones overlap with the real ones in the game.
  • His actual name.
  • His political affiliation (the “Subcomandante” title is doing a lot of work, but the launch wiki doesn’t pin down whose comandante he claims to be the sub- of).
  • Where he is in Quisach, or whether he’s reachable at all outside of the broadcast.

Source note: Fandom’s Subcomandante Bagman page is a single sentence. This page is built around that sentence plus cross-page material on Foto 24 and Portofiran media culture. The character is well-positioned to become a major figure once the wiki fills in.
