ZERO PARADES wiki

Mircean

Mircea is Hershel’s birth country, and it doesn’t exist anymore. Her Operant Bureau dossier identifies her as coming from the “former Republic of Mircea”. By ‘96, when Hershel returns to Portofiro to start the game, Mircea has been gone long enough that “former” is the standard descriptor.

The Hershel timeline

The dates the launch wiki commits to:

  • ‘79 or earlier — Hershel is living in Mircea with her mother. Birthplace: the city of Landau.
  • Before ‘82 — She radicalizes as a student. Mircean monotheists persecute her. She defects to the People’s Republic of Kohila, part of the Superbloc.
  • Before ‘96 — Mircea ceases to exist as a state.
  • ‘96 — Hershel returns to Portofiro as CASCADE.

So Mircea is a country Hershel can never go back to in two ways: she defected, and then the country dissolved.

What we know about the place itself

The religion

An unnamed monotheistic religion was practiced in Mircea. The same religion has followers in Portofiro now. The deity’s name is Polaris.

A few reads on that:

  • “Polaris” is a star name. In a world where boats (almost everywhere) are named after stars, a star-named deity is consistent with the world’s symbolic register.
  • The fact that the religion has a name for its deity (“Polaris”) but the religion itself is unnamed in the source is a small but pointed gap. The followers are everywhere; the franchise label isn’t.
  • It’s the religion that drove Hershel out. So when she encounters Mirceans-in-Portofiro or Polaris-followers-in-Portofiro, the past is in the room.

The language

Mircean is the language of Mircea. The launch wiki commits to that and not much more.

The city

Landau is named — Hershel’s birthplace. No further geography.

Why a player should care

Mircean stuff is Hershel’s stuff. Everything you read about Mircea is biographical for CASCADE:

  • Mircean-coded NPCs and Polaris-coded religious material in Portofiro will pull on her backstory.
  • The Bureau’s framing of her as “from the former Republic of Mircea” is a piece of state-issued identity that her actual experience doesn’t fully match — she defected before the country ended.

How to read Mircean material

Skills that pay off:

  • Records — Mircean state history, the dissolution, the Polaris religion’s geography.
  • Personalism — Mircean characters and Polaris adherents are personal terrain for Hershel. Personalism reads the room.
  • Poetics — religious language and a star-named deity. Poetics owns that.
  • Statehood — defection, dossier framing, the difference between “former” and “defunct”. Statecraft questions.

Source note: the read that “former Republic of Mircea” is a Bureau framing rather than Hershel’s own description is interpretive. The dossier line is from the source. The interpretation is mine.
