A Gift for Duchess

A Gift for Duchess is the courier-and-care side quest. Three ex-pat ex-pilots in The Backways are in love with the same woman on the other end of the Miracle LineDuchess, real name not given, who picks up under the codename “Honey-Voiced Woman”. They want to send her a gift. They cannot decide what.

You play go-between. That’s the whole task on its surface. Under the surface it’s about who Duchess actually is, which routes a player into the Housing Campaign and gets you in front of one of the most opinionated NPCs in Quisach.

Acquisition[]

While discussing the Miracle Line phone with the three pilots in The Backways, Pigeon will ask to have a gift delivered to Duchess’s residence.

Objective[]

The ex-pat ex-pilots, avid users of the Miracle Line, want to give Duchess a gift — but they can’t decide what it should be.

Subtasks[]

  • Deliver Duchess’s gift Duchess lives on a houseboat in the Housing Campaign, north-west of Party Alley.

Who’s involved

  • Pigeon (Gravel-Eyed Pilot) — the one who hands you the task. The three ex-pilots are heavy Miracle Line users, which is partly why they have opinions about Duchess.
  • Slava (Cigar-Smoking Old Man) and Loud João (Man in Captain’s Hat) — the other two pilots, equally invested.
  • Duchess (Honey-Voiced Woman) — lives on a houseboat in the Housing Campaign north-west of Party Alley. Reachable via Miracle Line phone otherwise.

How to play it

The task is short on paper:

  1. The three pilots can’t agree on a gift. The bit you’re working through is figuring out what they actually want to send vs. what Duchess might actually want.
  2. Take the gift to the Housing Campaign.
  3. Hand it over. See what Duchess does with it.

The interesting move is which gift you go with. The Backways pilots are not unanimous, and the game lets you reflect on whose read of Duchess is closest to right.

Skills that help:

  • Personalism for reading the pilots’ actual motives. None of them is sending the gift for a clean reason.
  • Cold Read for Duchess’s reception once you arrive.
  • Poetics if there’s a written component to whatever gift gets chosen.

Why bother

Two reasons:

  • The Miracle Line is a real thread. Other Loose Ends bullets mention the Miracle Line’s unique identifier, its Renotel payphone origin, and the rumour that the guy hogging it nightly works for EMTERR. A Gift for Duchess is the personal-life side of the same phone line — and Duchess is the only person who actually picks up.
  • The Housing Campaign is otherwise easy to skip. Quisach’s most-visited sub-areas are the Bazaar, Party Alley, and the Backways. The Housing Campaign sits behind Party Alley to the northwest, and Duchess is the main reason a player goes there at all. Doing this task is what introduces you to that whole northern stretch of the district.

What’s confirmed vs. unknown

Confirmed: Pigeon triggers the task while the three pilots are discussing the Miracle Line, all three want to send Duchess a gift, Duchess lives on a houseboat in the Housing Campaign.

Unknown to the player at start: Duchess’s real history with any of the three pilots, how she’ll receive the gift, and what (if anything) about the delivery feeds back into the Miracle Line / Renotel / EMTERR thread that the Backways pilots are also tangled up in.
